An early look at easier writing

Write emails and messages by speaking.

Put your thoughts into words with a simple desktop dictation app. For the days when talking comes more easily than typing.

For Windows 11. Mac testing is underway.
Current setup needs your own OpenAI key.

A note to a friend

Hi Sarah, I’d love to meet for coffee on Friday. Shall we say ten?

Your voice, in writing

Illustrative examples. This page does not record audio.

More of your words.
Less typing.

An email to a friend. A quick reply. A thought you want to keep. Start with something you already wanted to say.

Stay with what you’re writing

Start in a text field. Speak, then release the key. WordsByVoice attempts to insert the words there, with a manual paste option if needed.

Choose a comfortable control

Hold a shortcut while you speak, or switch to a press-to-start, press-to-stop mode in Settings.

Keep the final say

Review and edit the words before you send them. Optional writing styles help you adjust a draft when you choose.

A small habit for everyday writing.

Once the desktop app and microphone are set up, try a short sentence.

  1. Click where you want to write

Choose a text field in an email, message or document. Keep it selected.

  2. Hold the key and speak

On Windows, hold Right Alt beside the space bar. Wait for “Listening”, then speak naturally.

  3. Release, then review

Release the key to finish. After transcription, check the words and make any corrections before sending.

The Mac test uses Right Option. F8 and a toggle mode are available in Settings. App compatibility is still being tested.

What to know before you try it

  • A desktop computer. Windows 11 is the main target. An Apple-silicon Mac test build is also being evaluated.
  • A microphone and internet connection. Audio is sent to OpenAI for transcription after you finish speaking.
  • Your own OpenAI API key. The current prototype needs a key with available API credit. OpenAI usage is billed separately.
  • An early test build. Installation may show an unsigned-app warning. Windows hardware validation is still underway.

A few things you may be wondering.

Have another question?
Talk to us about setup.

Can I use it in every app?

WordsByVoice is designed to insert text into the selected text field, but compatibility varies and is still being tested. If automatic insertion fails, the transcript is available to paste manually. It does not press Send for you.

Do I have to hold a key?

No. Settings includes a toggle mode: press once to start and again to stop. You can also change the Windows shortcut to F8. The floating toolbar offers a mouse control.

What happens to my voice recordings?

The current cloud mode keeps the recording in memory and sends it to OpenAI after you finish. Cancelling while recording discards it before upload. A failed recording can stay in memory for retry or download. Read our privacy information for details.

How much will WordsByVoice cost?

Public pricing has not been set. There is no paid subscription or checkout on this website. The prototype uses your own OpenAI API account, and usage charges are separate.

Is it ready for general release?

Not yet. We are testing setup, dictation and app compatibility. Windows hardware testing and a simpler setup experience are still needed. Email us if you’d like to discuss early testing.

Why does a test build say SayAndWrite.com?

WordsByVoice is our new name. Existing prototype builds may still display the earlier name, SayAndWrite.com. Ask support for the current test instructions before installing.
